David Dunn is an award winning, international selling artist with thousands of art pieces distributed around the world. He uses contemporary techniques, based on Indigenous stories built around silhouettes. David’s painting style is simple, colourful, intelligent and he is an artist who respects his culture.
Now working with Petaurus Education Group, David is delivering Indigenous artist-in-residence programs to education institutions from preschools to high schools and the community. David has worked in over 100 early childhood centres, primary and secondary schools in NSW and Victoria.
Classroom Art Workshops
David’s art workshops are up to 90 minutes long and he can book up to 3 sessions (or classes) at one school in a day.
He starts students doing coloured background on canvas boards, usually red yellow and black to represent both the setting sun and the Aboriginal flag. While on paper, David instructs the students how to draw basic people by using stick figures. Students use his teaching to complete their own silhouette paintings.
David also runs plant and animal drawing workshops. He can provide boomerang and other tools for students to design and paint.
New for 2018
For 2018, David has designed new lesson that focus on Australian Flora and Fauna (see photo) above. He has developed templates that students can trace around to create their individual Aboriginal designs.
David is a lovely courteous man who really gets down to the level of the kids.

Murals and Story Poles
David enjoys helping schools create individual art works in the form of paintings, murals and story poles which relate to the area.
The story poles become a feature in the playground and can be used by students to play around and weave in and out of. Teachers and students can use the images on the poles to start storytelling sessions for many years after they have been completed.
The murals can become a feature on the buildings while the canvas paintings can be displayed inside.
Recently David has been creating Acknowledgement of Country signs.
