On Friday 17 August 2018 at 11am, The Hon Sussan Ley MP, Member from Farrer will open ‘The Sunshine Room’ a new administration and community office extension at the award-winning and unique Wirraminna Environmental Education Centre in Burrumbuttock.

The office will become a workplace hub for an increase in landcare, environmental education, cultural and sustainable agricultural programs by the Petaurus Education Group Inc staff, West Hume Landcare and Wirraminna volunteers.

School groups from across southern NSW and north east Victoria and the wider community will benefit with increased access to the unique facilities, 5 ha restored wetlands and woodlands, Creative Catchment Kids agricultural, environmental and landcare programs as well as showcasing Indigenous art and culture programs.

The Hon Sussan Ley opened the Discovery and Learning Centre at Wirraminna in 2006, and we are very appreciative of her on-going support.

The extension was funded through an Australian Government Building Better Regions Fund grant, NSW Premier’s grant, The Sunshine Foundation, Wirraminna Environmental Education Trust and Petaurus Education Group Inc. All contractors, materials and services were sourced from the local community.

Mr Greg Aplin, Member for Albury will launch two books at the same event.

  • The Wirraminna Story is a detailed history of the site complied by Mr Darryl Jacob and Mrs Jenny Jacob since 1993.
  • The other is the Squirrel Glider LAMP Project 2015-2018 book, highlighting the work of the Burrumbuttock farming community to protect and conserve the threatened Squirrel Glider.

Both books are testament to the longevity of the Wirraminna committee and volunteers and their close partnership with Greater Hume Shire, Commonwealth and State governments, Officer of Environment and Heritage and Murray Local Land Services.
